Hypoglycemia as a Thyroid Suppressor

Everything is connected to everything.  

I know that modern medicine, with doctors “specializing” in one organ or system (endocrine /
glands) or even one particular disease, tries to compartmentalize or segment our health and our
bodies…but all systems affect all other systems.  


And you will not find True Health if you don’t keep your eyes open for these relationships!
One relationship I find very frequently, is
the connection between hypoglycemia and low
thyroid function and symptoms.  


And here’s why… Low blood sugar is a survival threat!  A core function of the central nervous
system is survival…no surprise of course.  The core needs for survival are oxygen, GLUCOSE,
and use (a nerve must be activated or will die).  Our blood oxygen concentration should remain
over 95% or so, and our blood glucose should remain over 80.  


If blood glucose drops below 80, you begin to notice the characteristic symptoms of
hypoglycemia.  Shaky, jittery, nauseous, irritable…sometimes I ask patients how many people die
if they miss lunch!


The reason for this yucky feeling is the activation of the FIGHT OR FLEE response in the central
nervous system.  Nerve cells are very sensitive to a glucose deficiency, and they let us know it!


The organs/glands that protect you from low blood sugar are the liver and adrenal
glands.
 With healthy organs, the adrenal glands produce a bit of cortisol if your blood sugar is
dropping, and that signals to the liver to convert stored energy (glycogen, body fat) into glucose.  


With healthy organs, you can fast for days without feeling sick.  You’ll likely feel hungry…that is
the healthy message our nervous system provides to let us know it is time to eat.  If you feel
anything OTHER than hunger…even a mild irritability…it is a sign that the liver and/or your
adrenal glands are not functioning optimally.  


Now, if you return to the
seven types of thyroid dysfunction, we notice that type one is
low pituitary stimulation of thyroid, caused by STRESS PHYSIOLOGY.
 

That means that the cascade of stress hormones, such as adrenaline, over time, tell the pituitary
gland to slow things down.  


In nature, an animal would find a quiet place to rest and recuperate, but in capitalistic America,
we find a noisy Starbucks and get jacked up on a triple mocha latte!  


Not to worry, however…your symptoms, including fatigue, just get louder and louder, until you
meet the internal needs, in this case, rest and nourishment of the adrenal glands.  


Also remember, that another type of thyroid dysfunction is a conversion disorder, that some
people call Wilsons syndrome or disease.  The thyroid releases T4, and the LIVER converts this
hormone into the active thyroid hormone, T3.  


This is also why some people feel better on Armour thyroid replacement, because it contains T3,
whereas Synthroid only contains T4.  


The point is not what replacement to use though, it is healing the organs so you don’t NEED
thyroid replacement…so that you are actually healthy!  And this goal requires a healthy liver,
which means that you have to meet the needs of the liver.  


If you have been following the medical model of health, it is quite likely that you have NO IDEA
what the needs of the liver are!  And the sad thing is that this is basic physiology, that EVERY
doctor studied in first year medical school.  We ALL learn that our body functions via protein,
fats, carbohydrates, vitamins (including antioxidants) and minerals.  Those are baseline needs!


If I noticed a liver need, I might eat some broccoli, kale, and Brussels sprouts.  I would increase
whey protein and red meat.  Red meat contains high levels of carnitine, an amino acid that allows
the liver to convert fat into energy.  Red meat contains around 100 mg per serving, while chicken
has around 5 mg!  And if you try to get this amino acid through plant sources, the highest
sources are wheat (0.2 mg per serving) and asparagus (0.1 mg per serving).  (It is not an
“essential” amino acid, however, so your body will make it from other protein sources, but if my
liver is “needy” I go for red meat!)


Some of us (not nearly enough!) go on to study nature’s medicines, which meet our organs
needs more on a healing level.  Some healing liver herbs include milk thistle (documented to
reverse liver damage), dandelion root (yep, those pesky “weeds” that some people spray liver
stressing chemicals on) and Oregon Grape root.  (If you don’t recognize the names, just know
that they are plants, just like spinach!)


Since I went this direction…meeting the needs of the adrenal glands would include leafy greens,
mushrooms, fish, and avocado.  Healing needs are met by ginseng, Ashwagandha, and Holy
Basil (all plants like lettuce), and, although not vegetarian friendly, I find great RESULTS in
healing with adrenal glandular, which are extracts of actual adrenal glands from bison, cows, or
pigs.  


If you can MEET YOUR NEEDS at the first sign of hypoglycemia (feeling not well instead of just
feeling hungry), you can avoid chronic conditions such as thyroid dysfunction.  


Learning to LISTEN to your body and respond to its NEEDS nutritionally and via plant medicines
will save you from any chronic disease for that matter!
